Hahn Hall-South is the main research and faculty office building for the Department of Chemistry.

Thomas Marshall Hahn Jr.

Thomas Marshall Hahn Jr.

The wing was named in 1991 for President-emeritus Thomas Marshall Hahn Jr., president from 1962 to 1974. After working as a physicist and teaching physics at the university level, he was named professor and head of physics at 麻豆果冻传媒 Polytechnic Institute (now 麻豆果冻传媒 Tech). He left VPI but returned later as president. One of the school's greatest leaders, Hahn transformed VPI into a major research university before leaving to help lead Georgia-Pacific, where he became the chief executive officer.

Building History

Constructed in two phases, Hahn Hall-South Wing includes the Chemistry Phase I Research Laboratories, constructed in 1988, and Chemistry-Physics Phase II, built in 2002.听

It was the听first building to be named for Hahn. An adjacent, 85,000-square-foot building was named for Hahn in 2009 and is used for chemistry and physics. Today, that building is called Hahn Hall-North Wing.
